I have a Sony Vaio PCG-FX201 laptop 1.5 yrs old. The problem is the backlight does not always swich on when the laptop is turned on. In the last week it has got worse and after 15 tries today it finally came on.

My question is: can the backlights be changed or do you have to change the screen? If so can I do it myself or should I send it to Sony or 3rd party dealer?

Does anyone think it chould be a different problem?

On the IBM thinkpad I use I have the same problem with a loose connection. Opening the screen fully wide and then bringing it back to normal does the trick. Also another thing to check is most have a small button which shuts the backlight off when you close the lid, this may be a little sticky.

One of our vaio's at work does weird stuff like this. A sharp tap on the back of the screen seems to sort it.

Loose connection sounds likliest cause.
