Right! Now I've finally found the right area to post on. Here Goes,

I've got a carrera P.C and once or twice a day it just re-boots itself. I've had all the components swapped out so I think it must be software related, I'm running XP. Does anyone have any idea's what may be causing this? The support company will only swap out H/W and will not look at XP. I have re-installed XP from scratch and it's still happening.

Overheating?

Any software supplied with the motherboard to monitor CPU temps etc?

I'd support the overheating theory. You can download monitoring software to watch temperatures, fan speeds etc. I've used a (free) product called motherboard monitor in the past - think this is it, but don't have time now to fully check it out.

I agree with the overheating problem. I have a server at work which used to reboot itself when it got too hot. Like the guys above suggest, you can download software off the web that can monitor fan speeds and temps.

Perhaps try running your machine with out the case on for a while and see if that cures the problem. Also check that all fans are working correctly and are not obstructed by any wires or labels (this has happend to me in the past too!)

Question

Still on with the overheating theory, check for temp settings in the bios - could be called something along the lines of PC health status.
Either disable them all or put them to the max settings.
If you say that the mobo has being replaced previously, is the fan on the CPU definately seated properly ?

Richard,

Now that the covers are off it does not seem to re-boot that often, in fact As I scroll up and down pages I can hear a change in the noise of the fan, it sort of speeds up and slows (marginally). I have loaded some software which monitors the speed of the fan and I set it to 100RMP down from the 1400RPM defaulty and after a few minutes it alarmed and said that my fan was performing at 0 rpm. but I looked and it was spinning. A little confused now

had similar problem recently and finally traced to loose(ish) cabling terminals on the mobo. As the system warmed up the connection would become 'looser' and a reboot would occur or the system would freeze totally. Took an age to find but once all coneections cleaned and firmly re-seated the problem has not recurred.

I don't know the history here but if the OS was installed with a boot disk created on an academic or other trial/temporary version of windows then it'll exhibit that behavior.

Just throwing that out as something to eliminate.

All cables and connectors have been checked and double checked. Re-installed XP from scratch too. I think it may be the fan performing below par as it does seem more stable now that the cover is off.

Get a house fan and blow it into the side of the open case. This should knock the MB temp down about 5 degrees, and should prove or disprove the overheating theory.

I you can here the fan slowing down then this sounds to be like the PSU is not man enough for the job, you state it has been changed but if the units spec is not up to the job then no matter what PSU they supply it will be the same spec and will cause the same problem. May need to spec up a higher wattage PSU. Just my thoughts so may not be gospel.
