i have been trying to upgrade my old desktop, it has got XP OS and a PII.
i got new, motherboard, P4, 256ddr, CD writer and some 3D graphix card. put everything together using my old hrad drive and floppy disc.
when i try to reboot the pc now i get NTLDR is missing. and is not really allowing me to get started. i managed to instal and fresh version of xp but still it will not allow me to boot!!
can someone help?, what the **** is that NTLDR ?

Right Ho mate
NTLDR is one of the base system files that NT operating based OS's need to boot.
Sounds like you haven't got an active partition so the PC doesn't know where to look to boot into XP. Boot with a DOS disk and run FDISK check for active partitions.

Sorry - have to agree, for the hassle it will overcome, just do a fresh install
Been there as well - it's easier to do this....
Best of luck...

Had this problem. XP knows you have changed the hardware and thinks you are trying to duplicate the OS which means it won't boot. You can use the XP CD to repair over the top, but it is a fiddly job.
If you want to try the repair then send me a mail and I can take you through it.
Dave.

Have you changed you case as well ? if not what power is your power supply ?
The latest procesors need good quality power supplies of at least 300w.
Also check your temp in BIOS and if you can try some other memory or if youve got 2 sticks try taking one out..then swap them around but as has been mentioned try a fresh reinstall.
Im not sure about WinXP upgrade but you should be able to boot from the CD (if youve got it set up in bios).
Some time during the install it will ask for verification of an upgradable system...just put the Win98 disk in, after its looked at that Disk it will tell you to put the WinXP disk back in and carry on installing
