I have recently installed Windows 2000 ( replacing from scratch my Windows 98).
I am now NEARLY always getting the following message when I try to print anything.
"A communication error has occurred.
Check all cable connections and make sure all devices are on. If the device was turned off during printing, cancel the print job. If the error still does not clear, see the manual's troubleshooting section to cancel the error."
I have replaced the printer cable, but no better.
I think it is software based ( I have an Epson 870 Photo Colour Printer).
Can anyone help, please?

Have you got the correct driver for Win2k? If not you should go to the Epson website (www.epson.co.uk) and download the latest Win2k driver for your Epson 870.
Worth trying I think

The epsons can be a pain in the backside and a lot of them like to have an environment/status checker loaded on startup, which gets installed with the latest drivers from epson, if needed. May have nothing to do with it at all, but they can be funny beasts.
Looking at the epson site, it does indeed like having the status monitor running, so I would download the complete driver set here:
ftp://ftp.epson.co.uk/pub/uk/drivers/printers/inkjet/pc/win2000/sp870_win2k_full.exe 4.28MB in size
If you upgraded as in kept the applications etc intact, I would recommend checking for an earlier 98 version that you may have installed and removing it via add/remove programs.
Also, if you have it plugged in via Parallel cable, you should check and force IRQ assignment on the printer port. 2000/XP do not assign IRQ usage by default.
Right click my computer, properties, hardware, device manager, open up ports and double click on printer port LPT1.
Can't remember exactly, as have no parallel port on this rig, but I think click on the advanced? or properties tab or summat and you wil see an area regarding using the IRQ, set it to always use or use whatever assigned and you shouldn't need the legacy detection ticked really. If your machine is set up as per the norm, IRQ7 will be assigned to the port.
Reboot and install the driver from the link above and see how it goes
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Nick

Edited because linking to ftp sites is not supported with this forum software.

My great thanks to Mr Footlong for his detailed response to my question. I have just carried out the instructions and my printer seems to be fine again.
Merry Xmas and thanks again.
