Ok, been asked to post this by a friend of mine.
He's read an article about Digital Camcorders, and the fact that they support DV out, but not DV in, well, kind of. He says the article says that all digi Camcorders have DV in disabled. Why? because if they had it enabled they could be classed as VCR's which have a higher import tax value.
So he has questions.
* Is this true?
* is there any way to 'enable' DV in on digital Camcorders, if so then how?

Some older DV Cams could have the firmware updated to enable DV in, for the reasons you give. However, I think it's happening less frequently. TBH, though, since you can get a top quality cam with DV In for about £800 (e.g., what I've got - the Sony PC101, which also has analogue in, too) I can't see what all the fuss is about. It's not like you have to spend 2k on a camera to get DV-IN.

Markus,
Take a look at http://www.lynxdv.com/ to see if your camera is supported. They also do the software to unlock the DV-IN.
MarkO,
True, but what if you have an older camera (or less expensive one) and want to have it enabled? Some people (myself included) don't want to spend that much on a DV-In enabled camera.

Mark, thanks for the info
Nimbus, thanks for the link. My friend echo's your sentiments, he was reading the article and it mentioned about "dv cams with DV in are rather reasonably priced, starting at about 700 quid" reasonable, yes, more than the average person wants to spend, highly likey. No offence intended towards you Mark.

Both fair points. I guess I've always associated video cams with costing about a grand (ever since the first huge ones years ago) and it's true, I forget that you can now get a top quality cam for < £500.
