Anyone got a Shuttle ?
#1
I'm thinking about building one of these from a barebones system and wondered if anyone on here had one? (Its a small form factor pc for anyone who hasn't seen one- about half the size of a regular pc)
Any hints and tips gratefully received!

I'm considering one for an upgrade next year. Fed up of a huge tower chassis these days.
I'd go for one with an AGP slot though - even if you don't go for a high spec video card to start with, it prolongs the system life time a lot more. Onboard video is okay for 'Net access, MS Office etc but will soon drag if you get into games.

I'm getting one very soon.
both the Athlon and Intel versions now are available with the AGP slot, so I would tend towards the Athlon version, but they only do up to 266mhz fsb ( up to XP2400 processors ) & that means no thoroughbred core versions yet.

I got the SS51G a few weeks ago and it's Ok, quite well engineered.
I do have some problems with XP shutdowns/hibernate but there is a new BIOS from Shuttle that may fix the problem.
I bought it from Overclockers.com

I bought a SK41G version last week (AthlonXP with AGP) from MicroDirect to replace my second pc (PIII450). They had a weekend deal on, & I got it plus AthlonXP2000+ & PC2100DDR for £318.00.
Very easy to build, using the drives from my old pc & looks very smart (apart from the beige floppy & cd drives) but i'm looking at somehow replacing the cdrom front panel with the supplied blanking plate). If you're going to use it for games, you'll need a AGP card.
The heat pipe works very well (43c is good for a AthlonXP i think) and it's very quiet. I'm looking at using it as a Personal Video Recorder/DVD recorder.
You might think about getting a DVD/CD writer combo, as obvioulsy there's only one 5.25" drive bay.
For more info search on sudhian.com for "shuttle" or "xpc". There's a guy on there who integrated a 7"LCD widescreen display into the front panel. Absolutely amazing (even detailed instructions on how to do it).

Thanks for the input fellas, I'm undecided at the moment whether to go AMD (cheaper) or Pentium (more futureproof).
That Sudian site is a mine of info.
Daz, nice to see someone posting from my old home town

Nice idea, but i don't think it'd work. The entire front panel and the blanking plates are made up of a sandwich of aluminium, thin coloured sheet(paper?) and thick clear plastic acrylic. I think it's the coloured sheet that you can buy to change pc colour (mines standard white at the moment. The electroluminescent ones sound cool). The guy with the lcd display on the sudhian site tells you how to put the plate on your cdrom, but i think the floppy drive would be too difficult. I could probably live without the floppy anyway.
The guy with the lcd display recently won the shuttle modder of the year, in which he fabricated a whole new acrylic front with a thin slot at the top for CD/DVDs like a in-car cd player.
