£100 round my parts i think.

I would not have thought it was illegal to chip one, or even play a chipped game. The person who supplies the games would be the one who gets the trouble.

Simply fit a 29 pence on/off switch to your modchip. Problem solved.

Shaun

Appreciate the comments, i have edited some posts. I in no way am promoting piracy or illegal activity. I am only suggesting you can back games/music/films you own up to the Xbox using software you can find on the web.

As Shaun says there are other places to discuss this better, like www.xbox-scene.com

Anything else, discuss it offline. Then everyones happy.

Dave

Dan - Matrix is $70 all in from here. About £45. No soldering, one screw, piece of cake

Or the X-ecutor 2 Lite is due soon from here for $44 plus shipping but requires soldering.

Basically this lad has a menu option on his x-box that lets him copy games to the hard drive and also play multi region DVDs I can get it chipped for free but the hardware will cost about 200 squid and I'm not sure if it is worth the money compared to just getting a chip that plays copied games.

That would let you copy original games to the HD?, as opposed to copied games? That would give you the option of owning all the games that your local Blockbuster owns

If it's illegal to chip your X-Box then surely it's also illegal to fit aftermarket wheels to your car!!!

You own the unit outright, you are simply installing an aftermarket product which will allow you to play legitimate copies of your expensive games

Mr Evolution

The menu your mate will have is called EvolutionX

You install this from CD once you have chipped your X-Box.

This will allow you to do several things:-

a) Assign your console an IP address

b) Connect via crossover cable from your pc/laptop to your console

c) Use FTP program (best for XBox is FlashFXP) and copy the contents of the XBox D drive (the cd) to your pc

d) Use a program like RecordNow Max to write the files as a data disc to a blank DVDR

You now have a full working copy of an XBox game.

Or

Once you have FTP'd the files over you can send them straight back to the hard drive of the XBox.

Your XBox hard drive is split up into 6 partitions

C, E, F, X, Y, Z and the CD drive is D

As standard F isn't formatted but you can add a few commands to the EvoX ini file to format it and this will give you an extra 2 Gig to play with.

Once you copy the games to the hard disk you simply edit the EvoX menu file and you can then play the games direct from the hard drive.

Most chips can allow you to swap the original hard disk for another upto 120 Gig - as long as your chip resets the 'Reset when you press Eject' FEATURE!!!!

Hope that makes sense

Cheers

Paul

p.s A word of advice, if you start messing with the XBOXDASH.XBE etc then before you do anything copy the contents of C and E on your XBox to a safe place on your pc for backup purposes, if you completely screw up then oyu can restore the original setup.

It's not yet certain yet that MS will/can stop you using XBox live if you have chipped your X-Box

You're not breaking any laws by chipping your console.

Reset chips will probably get around that problem anyway

I hope it is! I'd rather not have modded Xbox's on the Live network. The fact that everyone has the same hardware and software is what appeals. Xboxconnect will no doubt work with modded xboxs and it's free, much more appealing to the average modder.

Exclamation

Guys,

There are SO MANY sites around that discuss such issues as these.

Any discussion on how to by-pass protection and copyright will not be tolerated in any shape or form in these forums. So peeps, the law is the law...... and not even Scoobynet is above it.

Since BIOS revisions/chips and software like EVOX, are actually based on what is copyrighted XBOX BIOS code............. they are infact illegal. A WELL KNOWN Japanese retail web outlet, was closed down and legal wranglings with Sony and Microsoft, ended up in them *apparently* paying HUGE compensation. The site is now operational, but no longer sells such devices.

If this thread goes any further into these issues, I will have no choice to lock it.

Thanks for your help.
Shaun.

Any game you pay a lot of money for you can legally make a back-up copy

These devices are sold LEGALLY to enable you to play these backups.

This is why they are now openly sold and why shops can hang banners out of windows saying 'X-Box chipped here'

Exactly the same reasone why shops and trade stands will openly unlock your mobile phone for you while you wait.

I think you'll find it's the trading of illegal copied games thats illegal and not making / playing legitimate backups of our own.

If I want to make a genuine copy of my expensive games and still go onto X-Box Live then why shouldn't I be able to.

What happens if the disc gets damaged while playing the original, Microsoft would tell you to get stuffed and you'd have to go and buy another one.

You go to any computer fair (I go to Bowlers in Manchester) and there are a lot of stands that will openly chip your X-Box for you, if this was illegal, or more to the point, if Microsoft could make it illegal, then these places would not be tolerated and they would be closed down.

I can't see how you can threaten to lock a thread when people are discussing making legitimate backups.

p.s. Jack why don't you want someon with a modded XBox on Xbox live, you stated they have different hardware - my hardware is exactly the same as yours you plank!!!

It's the BIOS thats changed, and thats identical in that it runs exactly the same code except the checks to see if you have a original game in.

<cough> Are we not talking about 'Chipping' an Xbox? To me that's hardware mate! And yes, you could use that 'Hardware' for legitimate purposes, just as you can use a dagger to peel a grape.

I can see why people would be against this. The reason Microsoft do not want this is not because of different hardware and not becuase of copyright issues but people using trainers to give themselves an unfair advantage over other players. This is what ruined online PC gaming.

Jack

The hardware is identical

It's the BIOS software that's modified

If you've ever flashed your BIOS on your pc then it's the same thing.

What if people had the same attitude about cars!!!

"I don't want modified Subarus on the road cause it doesn't give me a fair chance!!"

Bla Bla Bla

I've chipped my console to backup my games, watch multi-region dvd's and to make my console more versatile - bigger hard disk, store MP3's etc

Hardly a fair comparison is it ? Unless you consider every minute driving your car to be a race against everyone else ?

Thats a fair point but you know as well as I do that chipped consoles will be using Live.

I for one won't be using trainers to get an advantage, why bother, wouldn't that take the fun out of playing - unless all you ever care about is winning of course.

Looking at your last post stating your console mods, don't you find the console is so much more versatile once chipped.
