IF you are using Windows2000 Pro or Server (haven't tested this on other MS os') trying createing a folder called con

it wont allow you to. It also wont allow any document to be called con, trying createing a text file in note pad and saving it as con.txt , or in word and saving it as con.doc

It just doesn't allow it!! Bizaarrree!!!!

Anyone know why?

It's a reserved word, going back to the days of DOS, when it was the name of a device (the console).

Other reserved words are COM1, COM2, LPT1, LPT2 etc and PRN.

You can actually use CON if you really want from command line. Eg "COPY CON TEST.TXT" will copy everything you type to the file test.txt. Press Ctrl+Z to exit.

The days of DOS boot disks but a quick COPY CON would let you write a batch file without needing Edit.

Actually, anyone remember EDLIN?

I could never be bothered to learn EDLIN. I've had to put up with some pretty awful editors on Unix (which didn't have VI) and VMS before though.

Steve,

vi is for long-haired, sandal-wearing hippies that don't have a girlfiend

You don't look like Dr Denzil Dexter do you Steve?

Even I remember being forced to use Edlin in 5th year at High School
