cool stuff!
what made you go for the road angel? or is it a gift?
you'll have to give me a demo as it looks like a nice device.
regarding your question, autoroute is pretty good and fairly cheap. (see me in person for more on this ) There are packages that will do the whole Sat-Nav thing, but i expect they will be more expensive. I'll look into it though, it's an interesting point.

just looked at the road angel site www.blackspot.com
it says this:
I've had a look at the Info Map product. It looks quite good, you can download a free demo to see if you like it.
Prices range from £34.99 to £130.
I have also looked at others specifically doing voice directions, but most of the voice products such as Pharos or Tomtom navigator are targetted towards Pocket PCs(iPAQ, jornada) not laptops.
Will keep looking as i'm intrigued now

it says this:
I am connecting to my mapping software but it is displaying that it cannot recognise the device? - ROAD ANGEL is NMEA compatible and communicates at 9600 baud rate. Microsoft AUTOROUTE needs to communicate at 4800 baud rate. With out modifying Autoroute it will NOT be compatible.
We recommend Info Map from Directions. www.directions.ltd.uk

Just got a Road Angel GPS and want to plug it into my laptop to use as a navigational aid (toy) for driving direction etc.
Can anyone recommend the best type of software for this, only one that springs to mind is Autoroute, any others. Are there any around which you plug in point A to B and it'll talk you through the route? Cheers.

Infomap works out the box with serial GPS devices as should Autoroute/MapPoint. Theres another called Personal Navigator but thats not (or wasn't last time I used it) too detailed. The AA do one as well.
Ones with voice directions are more aimed at PDAs (Palm/iPaq etc) as its probably less conceivable to use a lappy as a SatNav.
