Thinking about buying one now they are at a sensible price

Which one ??

Can I back up my current DVDs and play them back on my DVD player ??

I believe the 4x writers are due out imminantly, if not already available.
Perhaps worth holding out for one.

In theroy, yes you could.

I s'pose in theory, you could download covers from certain websites and print them off to make the back up look a touch more professional.
But that, of course, is illegal innit

OK just bought a Pioneer DVR-1O5 DVD-RW for 190 quid from overclockers.co.uk

----Pioneer's DVR-105 drive offers twice the speed of other drives with 4X DVD-R, 2X DVD-RW, 16X CD-R and 8X CD-RW capabilities. The new 4X DVD-R recording takesapproximately 15 minutes to record 4.7 GB DVD-R disc. The DVR-105 also offers two-minute quick formatting for DVD-RW data discs, and allows finished DVD-RW discs to be "left open" for writing additional files.-----
