Your best bet is to take it to a local independant games trading shop.
They usually guarantee your machine for 1yr from 'chipping'.
Most places take about £70 for chipping an xbox but will usually throw in a couple of games in that price.

SDB - you sure mate. Any of the independant shops i went into to talk about modding said they wouldnt do it.
Anyway, unless you are confident in your soldering abilities dont do it.
Mind you the new chips are available with spring loaded pis to you dont have to solder them in or pin headers that you can plug the chips in with. look at www.x-ecuter.com.

Most of the shops in Dundee offer this service.
If you are struggling to find somewhere to do it, feel free to send me the console and i'll get it done for you.
I know a few people that have had it done with no problems, IIRC its a mod chip that doesn't require swapping disks or dancing naked round the console with your finger on the power button etc.

There's a few advantages of chipping your X-Box.
The chip runs the original BIOS except the check for correctly signed media. This allows you to play your 'legitimate' backups of expensive games.
On the other hand it lets you play copies of games that you haven't got.....saving you £45 quid a time....which is nice!!!
Copying the games is easy enough, once your console is chipped install something called EvolutionX Dashboard. This replaces what you see when you boot your conole with no disc in.
Using this dashboard you can assign your console an IP address allowing you to FTP from a laptop / pc to your console to transfer the contents of a game cd. (Can't read them directly in your pc as XBox games are written back to front, similar to UDF format)
You can also format the F drive partition on your console giving you 2Gig more space.
The best advantage is you can copy games to your hard drive and using the EvoX menu option you can play games directly from your hard drive giving faster access times.
You can also play Region free and copied DVD's using DVDX2.0 - and using this you don't need to buy the Dongle and Remote Control.
If you X-Box was manufactured before September 2002 (check the bottom of your console for manufacture date) then the best chip to get is the Xecuter, if it's the new console then the new Xecuter 2 comes out on the 7th December.
Cost you £60 at most places to get it chipped, try a computer fair - Bowlers in Manchester is best place to go if you live in that area.
One thing to remember is that if you are looking to use X-Box live when it starts on March 2003 then you'll have to look for a chip which can be de-activated using a switch!!!
Cheers
