I was on a course this morning, the guy running the course said he could get 56kbps modems running up to twice this speed (100Kbps +) on a standard phone line.
Has anyone known this to be the case? I thought modems where restricted to the speed of a phone line.

Is he talking bo11ocks, if not how is he doing it. He wouldn’t tell anyone.

Cheers

Jer

lol it's only possible to connect @ 56K in a lab as it is, V90 is very sensitive to line conditions, weather etc. I think the best a home user can achieve is 53K or so. So unless he has 2 phone lines and one of those 2modems into one connection gizmos (shockwave or something) hes talkin cacka.

As mentioned above, you could multiplex two connections into one.

Getting more than 100k downstream out of a 56k modem will require modifications to both ends.

in other words, I am firmly of the opinion that he's talking sh1te.

Does it involve putting magnets on the PSU to the modem or on the phone line in order to align the electrons up better?

Meh, you can do this on any ISP that supports MPPP on a dial up with 2 completely different modems (ie one 56k and one 33k).

Win 98SE or later gives you the option on the dialing properties page...

I've channel bonded 2 modems before

But I bet the 100 odd kbps he is reporting is the serial connection speed between the computer and modem?

The connection at the exchange side is 64k of which some is used up for testing, some for communication with the rest of the switch etc, its pretty impossible for it to do more than 56k to be honest, 100k would require a complete miracle

As I said, I thought he was talking a load of Bo11icks. Although the guy who was training me seems to know what he is talking about, Although I thought he was talking Sh1te.
I have done a degree in multimedia technology and remember V90 only getting that speed in a lab.

TonyBurns is totally correct, although I wonder if you could do something assuming that you used a 'wires only' type private wire? Not that anyone would though.
