My hubby thought he's clever but he's gor ADSL rooter and can't figure out how to connect it to the computer.

He's idea is to install a network card (network card installed correctly) and connect the rooter into it.

In the connection settings he chose broadband connection (dialing the ISP ?) but the choice of modems he gets doesn't find the rooter.

Using Win XP prof., BT rooter, unknown make.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Kate

Hi Kate

Check out this site - all sorts of useful ADSL stuff

Have linked to a page that at the bottom show lots of different ways of connecting, may help. With any luck you may be able to identify the router and get specific help on that - they have lots of product reviews

http://www.adslguide.org.uk/guide/connections.asp

The site notes "Beware! a certain amount of software configuration must also be carried out before computers and network peripherals are able to operate or communicate with each other. This includes software driver installation for USB modems, and the correct assignment of IP addresses and related parameters for Ethernet networks."

So expect a fair bit of b*ggering about before this works

If it's just the one PC, you'll need a cross-over cable to connect to the router. Or the router might have an 'uplink' port which could be used with a normal network cable.

Somewhere with the router it'll tell you what IP address the router comes configured as. This might be 192.168.0.1.

On the XP PC, you won't set up any connection settings for ADSL. You need to setup the network card to have an IP address (eg 192.168.0.2 with subnet mast 255.255.255.0) and set the default gateway address to be the IP of the router (eg 192.168.0.1).

Then you'll need to setup the router. It's instructions will tell you how to do this (they probably tell you how to set everything up) - it might be a case of using a web browser to connect to http://192.168.0.1 for example, and then you'll have to enter your ADSL username and password etc.

hi mark

kate were sending you mails yesterday which I was dictating over the phone as I was at work, so sorry the sometimes weird answers.

I've just found that the router is Efficient 5861, as it is 2nd hand I have no instalation CD or manual but just got to the efficient.com where is the manual (downloading as we speak - 33.6Kbps is slow )

So I'll look through the manual and if I found anything I don't understand I'll post it up here, or will you Kate again over the phone - if you don't mind.

BTW thanks again for all replys

ok to you all concerned...

took me 6 and 1/2 hours to figure it out, but done it and here goes fast line

went through all those setting 1000s times (literary) and couldn't figure out why its not working, even took apart all the bloody BT boxes if all the wires are in place, made a huge mess in the house, Kate is still asleep so I should try to clean up a bit

well at the end it was a network card which was Intel 82558 - based integrated ethernet with vake on LAN which didn't comunicate with the router.

Found an very old one realtek RTL 8029 and here we go

Mark -> thanks again for the time you've spent yesterday talking to Kate

thanks thanks thanks all
now I'm happy bunny, actualy velryba

Yeah you need a cross over patch cable if its plugged directly into the network card. If you are using a hub/switch you dont need to use the cross over patch cable

Thumbs up

Yep. However, some DSL routers have an "uplink" port (or a switch that changes the port into an uplink port) - in this case you don't need the cross-over cable because the port is wired differently.
