Question

Hi all,

I have recently upgraded my telephone connection to 128K ISDN which should give me faster internet access and allow me to use the phone while surfing. However I need advice on which modem to get. I've been looking at ones that connect via a USB port but I'm not sure if this is the best option?

I remember reading somewhere that USB is not the best route for this type of application and I'd be better using one that connects via a Firewire port? Also, is it possible to get an internal 128K modem that fits into one of the PCI slots?

As I'm not very knowledgeable in this area can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance,

Gavin

So you need an ISDN adapter then. The BT one for about £30 used to be the one to get. I'll get more info...

USB should be fine for use on a single PC. The bottleneck will be the ISDN connection.

Eicon do some good products in both USB and PCI:

Dabs.com do the PCI card for around £40+VAT, the USB is more expensive.

Alternatively, Overclockers sell the Asus PCI card for £29+VAT

There's a Dynalink PCI one on dabs.com for £30 inc. which will do the job.

Hello

Finding a reliable ISP that supports 128K is more fun. The most reliable I've come across (for the money) is www.123isp.co.uk and even they have their bad days.

You might want to invest in a slightly more expensive modem if you want it to do clever things like drop one channel if you want to make a phone call ...

Steve.
