Got a SoundBlaster Audigy Player which has a digital out, but is that optical? And a Sony MZR91 MD recorder with optical in.
Can I record to the MD digitally? What cable do I need, where from, etc.
Many thanks

Yes you can

Your audigy has a coax sp/dif out, so you need to convert to optical. I use a Midiman CO2, which I got from Dolphin Music for 35 quid. It's a bidirectional optical->coax convertor.

Maplins also sell a one-way convertor for 20 quid, which might be preferable... QN17T is a convertor from coax->optical, which allows you to record your PC digitally on our walkman thing.

Cheers,
Nick.

Cheers Nick
Is that going to maintain digital quality though? Will it be noticably better than the analogue cable I use from the 3.5mm lineout now?

It does maintain digital quality. The converter is only converting from electrical digital (the coax SP/DIF) to optical. It's still digital information. Purists will argue that one sounds better than the other. I couldn't be bothered with that argument personally

Will it be better? It really depends on how the combo sounds. I actually prefer some sources recorded from analogue to minidisc after playing around... My cd player is a rega planet, and I can output digitally to my minidisc recorder (coax connection). To me, recordings sound better done through analogue, as the D->A converters on the CD player are damned good and do make for a more natural, open sound.

MP3s recorded to minidisc digitally sound very compressed unless you're careful with your settings

Experiment and see what works best

Nick.

Alternatively, don't go through the sound card and get one of the USB->Minidisc cables that are available

That's the other way, yes, but it's the same argument... "is digital worth it?"
