Question

This has been bugging me since last night when I installed an Athlon 1200 (cheers Dunk ) from a Duron800, Asus A7V mobo, 512mb pc133 ram, using Win2kpro sp3. The install was fine, cpu works great etc. But Win2kpro wouldnt boot to the desktop It stopped where u c the win2k logo and blue progress bar at the bottom. The bar got about 80% along then just froze. Retried several times.

Anyway a repair wouldnt work so I had to do a full reinstall of the os to get it back up again. So the question is, do u have to resintall win2k when changing an AMD cpu? I didnt think u had to?

I cant find anythin on the web about it, so if any of u guys know why it happened would be appreciated, cheers.

Duron will be 200mhz fsb, Athlon could be either 200 or 266. Have you got the setting correct in the bios ? Not sure of this motherboard as to whether it will need changing manually, autodetects or even needs a jumper on the motherboard changing.

yeh fsb is fine I know whats what there, a7v mobo is only a 200fsb board, the cpu is a 200fsb athlon to, bios settings were defaulted on powerup after the install. So no problems there. Bottom line is win2k would only work after a reinstall.

I think I read somewhere that having ACPI switched on when upgrading things on Win2k can cause probs. Switching it off should sort it

300W no problem there either

I had big problems gettin SP3 on to. Blue screen stop messages and crap. Had to put SP2 on before it would work with SP3.

Also the only other piece of sware Roxio EZCD5 burning app wouldnt work anymore, straight after installing windows and sp2/3. Had to use Nero instead, very strange.

the ACPI layer rings a bell for some reason. There was a change in ACPI standards about a year ago and images weren't compatible. I also remember some of the older CPQ laptops (AM74xx era) needed their BIOS' reflashed in order to run W2K, otherwise they hng on install.

There is a setting on bootup to see where the OS gets to before it stops, at least you'll know what has and hasn't been loaded before hanging. Does it boot OK with either a DOS disk or in safe mode?
