I'd be interested to know about this, too. I'm thinking about putting an MP3-based whole house audio system into my next house (particularly if we do self-build, as it'll be easy to integrate into the house during the build). The idea of not having to mess around with CDs etc, but just have a small panel in a few of the rooms for selecting music would be great.
Any opinions or alternatives?

wiring up the house is a slippery slope. I now have a few outside lights whcih can be turned on/off via the Pronto Remote Control. Hopefully this weekend will see the Central Heating come under "proper" control. When I've finished installing the alarm, the house will be able to control a few interior lights to make it look occupied, leave the lights outisde on dim until movement is detected and then go to full bright.
I'll be able to browse the log of activity from work, and give the heating a quick boost if I'm off home early

God this is me all over I must stop being so bloody impulsive. I might have know the techie bunch that Scoobynet are would have a hand in selling this sort of kit
BTW the SliMP3 just arrived at my office not 2 seconds ago and looks like a top piece of kit Im impressed I only ordered it yesterday afternoon, top service or what.....
I will let you know how I get on with it if anyone is interested. I dont have a lot of networking experience so I hope Its easy to get up on running.
Im happy with the price anyhow as it just looks soooo well made.

Did you see last week's Grand Designs (the old mill with the modern interior)? That's the kind of thing I'm hoping to achieve, but with the lighting and music playlist panel just a small thing like the SliMP3 thing.

Yep.
Unfortunately I cant get that degree of control over all the lights without re-wiring big sections of the house
If you do new build you have so many possibilites - Touchscreens/Voice Control/Infra red contol..... I can give you a long list of other sites/bbs/mailing list to fill your emtpy days

And you just jealous 'cos you cant turn the lights/heating on from your PC

You need to start planning long before you start building
A few URLs to keep you going (and you'll notice my sad/geek rating pales into insignificance against some )
US list of lots of relevant sites
Uk Home Automation Portal
A Nutter
Another Nutter

p.s. surprised Tiggs hasn't waded in with some abuse by now

Those two 'nutter' links are funny. They've got the right idea, but it's all such a bodge job! I mean, using white plastic MK switches, etc., all wonky, doesn't exactly look smart!
Tiggs is probably busy with the trackday threads in General, if he's got any sense.

One of the incredibly frustraing things is that the UK consumer market is only just starting to take off so there are limited purpose built UK products. So you get things like an IR reciever whcih are about £5 components being unavailable in UK spec wall boxes. You either buy a bespoke commercial system and pay £xxxx for a controller an £xxx for decent looking reciver or DIY - which can have variable results.
I still on the look out for a decent external PIR whch I can hook up to the alarm. (i.e. 12VDC not 240VAC). Few and far between.
