Question

I've just downloaded a video file subaru.mpg from Imesh and although windows seems to recognise the file as a windows media player file (right icon) when I try to play it I get the message 'no combination of filters can be found' or 'inavlid media type'. I've been to the MS download site and downloaded the codecs available - no difference, any ideas ? I think the file might be Aussie origin - do they use some strange format ?. Is there a tool for determining what format it might be ?

p.s. doesn't work on realplayer either.

Kevin.

Pro'lly the quickest way without clarting around is to goto windows.com and dowload the latest media player.

Someone might have renamed it. Try renaming to .avi or .mov and opening again. Could also be .zip

Unhappy

Do you have Media player 9 by any chance?
I get the same problem with various codecs in MP9
I've even installed fresh codecs after upgrading from MP8 and it still says the same thing.
It seems to only play MPG or AVI's in their raw format, with no encoding.

I'm getting those issues since my upgrade to WMP9 as well. I guess that's why it's a beta!

Might need to downgrade as I *HATE* RealPlayer!

Try applequicktime if you are struggling to get it to play in windows media player. Thats my normal back up for files that won't play in wmp. Try downloading all the divX codecs as well.

Real player sucks big time.

Thanks all, I'll give Si's codecs a go first. Which one's ? - or all ?, I'm on Win2000 and the media player is 7.01.
