Have a look on the laptop makers website for a specific shut down patch for win 98SE for a laptop. My old tosh needed one to enable it to shut down.
Have you installed the 98 SE shut down patch avaible from microsoft ? This was originally designed for machines with 98 SE on with mapped drives but it does solve a few other non documented shut down problems !

Is there anyway you could upgrade to Win2K or XP? The power management is quite good on these operating systems.
Otherwise you will need a power management patch from the vendor.

Hi Scotty.
I would tend to agree with other replies on this.
Try the 98 shutdown patch first, then think about your
power management within Bios next, (turn it off, to test).
Most main laptop suppliers do have frequent bios updates.
you could check to see which is the latest for your model.
(something to think about : some bios upgrades can put on
faults as well.) take a backup or also download your current version if available.
cheers
