OK heres the challenge.
XP Pro box with Winfax Pro installed sends faxes without problem, but something on the PC is causing the incoming part of the line to show permanently busy, so cannot receive faxes. It is not the modem, as I can force Winfax to manually answer, and can hear the modem doing this, whilst all the time getting an engaged tone trying to call in.
I'm guessing the cause must be related either directly to Winfax, or to TAPI, as the phone line does not become engaged until Winfax starts - if I attempt to ring in whilst it is starting I get ring tone, then call answers but drops after 1/2 second and line is then busy.
Anyone experienced this, knows of a fix, or can tell me what else could be causing this please?

Hello again, tried all of that without success
However, I have found out a little more. If I use hyperterminal and set it to listen for incoming calls the same thing happens, therefore I am starting to suspect the problem lies with the TAPI settings rather that Winfax itself.
Going to get hold of another modem tonight to see if that makes the slightest difference.
Thanks for your help so far

OK round 2
Swapped the modem at 08:00 today. At 08:02 all was working as it ought to.
At 14:15 twas still working as it ought to.
I therefore propose marking this case closed
