Andy, the same stick of DDR in a say a P42.2 setup will easily outperform a XP 2200 with KT333 setup. The Intel 845G and E series have way better memory bandwidth performance than the Athlon counterparts. Example, Corsair XMS3200-C2 stick that I have pumps out 2.1xGb/s on a Epox 8k5a2+ KT333 boardrunning 133mhz bus with a XP2200+. The same stick with the same timings in my P4 2.2@2.93(=22x133mhz bus)running on an Epox 4G4A+ (i845G) pumps out 2.8Gb/s. See what I mean?
The P4's need the memory bandwidth and the more that it can get, the better it will perform until it reaches optimal bandwidth. the mainstream Athlon XP (not the latest 2x166mhz models) only takes advantage of around 2.6Gb/s of memory bandwidth if memory serves. I can't remember the amount for optimal bandwidth for the P4(4x133), but it is somewhere around 5.2Gb/s.

Cheers,

Nick

My dual PIII 500 just doesn't cut it anymore!

I want a top spec games PC, for about £600-800!

I'll need the following items:

CPU (P4 Chip as they seem to be getting better benchmarks!)
Motherboard
DVD ROM Drive
CD Burner
FDD
128Mb GeForce 4 card!
1Gb Memory
NIC
Case

I'm happy with my 120Gb HDD!!! That's about it!!!

I'm happy building it myself!

Any ideas?

Andy if your on a budget go for an Athlon, yes the fastest P4's are faster then the fastest Athlons but you can buy an Athlon XP2200 for about £120 where a P4 2.5 will set you back about £250.
Also the GeForce 4 ti4200 is about the best value card out there at around £120.
Also a P4 will need to run good quality ram to beet an Athlon which is more expence.
Id go for an Athlon XP2200 £120
KT333 mobo £80
Samsung 2700 ddr £110 for 512mb
GeForce 4 ti4200 £120
Heatsink/fan £20

Total £450
which gives you plenty of cash to spend on a case CDRW ect
Why spend about 50% of you budget on a CPU ?? when a cheeper Athlon will do ?

Andy

just like to say that i havnt got anything against Intel systems its just that you can build a cheeper system using an Athlon CPU as the base....just my opinion

Indeed, my thoughts exactly.... P4s now not bad value...

Stick it in a Sis648 based board (cheaper than Intel, and quicker) run it with 512Mb 3200DDR, add a GF4ti and a DECENT CASE WITH DECENT PSU and you should have some cash spare...i'd say about £550 for that lot...... board should have 6 channel sound, usb2.0 and LAN (maybe firewire or serial ata) .... maybe MSI for about £80

Cool

Andy

*Might* take your mobo/chip/ram off you?

I'm hacked off with wifey constantly using my machines to do her office work on. I've a spare case, graphics, sound, CD, monitor etc etc lurking about so if you want shot, then I'd be grateful.

I notice its a dual & before I get caned for "excess" for wifey's office tool, I'd be doing some video-editing with it.

Why she can't use her iMac with MS Office installed, I don't know She gets "confused" with the different OS's.
