My 17" monitor is a year old and has always provided an excellent display. Now, however, if I look at, for example, a Word document, the characters at the left and right edges of the screen are squeezed together and the characters in the middle of the screen are wide apart.

Any help gratefully received!

It could be your settings, then again if you havent changed them;
try another monitor if you can.
As far as i can recall, Hansols are the cheap end of the market.
And with monitors (unless you are unlucky) you get what you pay for. sorry.
If it isnt your settings on pc; looks like a new monitor.

Hansol come with a lifetime warranty - dead easy to use too - just phone them up (they have a web site,k not sure of URL) and they will arrange to have it collected and a new one delivered - customer service is spot on!

I got a 15" replaced last year, all sorted in 2 days - suprised me big time!!
