Home Surveilance

Was wondering what software I could use, if I setup a PC in the loft with a capture card, rigged to a outdoor mounted camera ?
Ideally it would run 24hrs a day, filling a hard disk I presume, on a constant loop.
Anyone done this ? Also need details of a camera that will give good clarity in day and nightime conditions.

I've been playing.
Currently have a linux box streaming the camera and taking stills when motion detected. I've aslo looked at the iVista windows packages which certainly give all the features etc that you need but aren't free .
My Camera was £25 from B&Q and is utter sh*te

I thought about a similar thing when Powerhouse were selling off Tivos cheap (GBP100 each).
They would be ideal, just plug in a composite video camera via the SCART and somehow enable continuous recording in such a way as it over-writes the oldest stuff as it goes. Thus you would have a 40 hour loop (or even more if you upgraded the hard drives).
Trouble is that the shop said that the recording functions were _very_ limited without a subscription, so i didn't bother.
Anyone with a Tivo know whether you can do such clever recording tricks?

Hmmm TIVO and SKY+
Was thinking of one of these just to replace my ageing VCR. The subscription thing sounds a rip-off though. Wonder if I can just program it to record BBC1 , etc... without having to subscribe.
Good idea incidentally about putting it on continuous record for home surveillance.

I've been trying to work this one out too - got my camera from RF Concepts then went back and got the DIY kit which has the rest of what I needed - power supply, modulator so that I can put it into my TV distribution loop and a 20m cable so that I can site the camera properly.
The camera works fine and I'll probably get some more but I havent got it recording onto the PC yet.
As I've also got broadband I also wanted to get it working so that I could view it remotely.......maybe one day I'll get round to it.........
