Problem upgrading win98se to XP Pro
#1
Trying to upgrade my PC from 98se to XP Pro. Just doesn't work right.
Checked compatability - seems ok.
Installs fine then hangs at first start up. On second start up, runs all the way to the login screen then hangs after "loading personal settings" meassage. Works ok in safe mode.
Checked MS knowledge base for solution - mentions something about pagefile.sys but instructions for fix unclear.
Any ideas?

I've had similar prob with my friends comp.
oh how many blue screens I've seen
well at the end I've found that his memory stick was faulty and got him new one and now hes a happy bunny
but yes, must agree to start fresh instalation and not an upgrade.
good luck

You might be right about the memory since during one the previous set ups for XP, the memory check on boot up only ran up to 132 Mb (and I have 192) but no errors with this. How can I tell if the memory is faulty - 98 se runs well and always has done. I don't want to change DIMM's without knowing if one (or which one) is faulty.
