Suba,
There is a rumour going around that SP1 detects for known 'non-legit' copies, and if found deletes vital files/prevents boot-up/erases harddrive (take your pick!)
The only solution is to find an SP1 upgrade that works with your 'version' of XP - I've had SP1 installed for over a month so far, without any problems at all. In fact - surfing appears to be faster
If you know what 'version' of XP you have, mail me off-line - I might be able to help with the SP1 updated
Daniel
PS - Just because I MIGHT be able to help with a 'non-legit' SP1, does not mean in any way that I hold or copy illegal software, nor do I condone the practice in any way

I think generally the main problem with XP is the activation thingy,
I for instance have a valid edition of XP home but generally like tinkering, which sometimes leads to a format of HDD.
then I have to approach MS to get a new code which they generally ain't too happy about

I wouldn't worry. I have it on good authority that it's perfectly possible to change your registration code and install SP1 and still have everything work perfectly.

from what i read, after SP1 is installed on a non-legit copy of XP[1], it will disable www.windowsupdate.com.
[1] of course it is wrong to use non-legit software , but it is also important to know what stuff microsoft is scanning when you run windowsupdate. will microsoft be the biggest spyware company overnight?
