MS Access - maximum records
#1
In MS Access 2000, is there a imit as to the maximum number of records ?
eg we push through circa 20,000 transactions per week.
For a 50 week year, thats 1,000,000 records.
Will Access cope ??

airhead,
it wont be a # of records limitation, it will be the max. file size of 2gb that will be your limit. For your requirements I dont think access is beefy enough, with that many records being added each week I think you will suffer performance problems pretty quickly. You might want to look at MSDE (microsoft data engine), do a search for it, which is basically a SQL Server 2000 desktop database engine which you can administer using microsoft management console.
Cheers

We're still using Access for something that was a quick fix but has now ended up as a core system...
It's sufficient for a LOT of things. But if you can use SQL server back end, and maybe use access as your front end for reports, forms etc then you may save yourself hassle in the distant future?

airhead,
I wouldn't advise using Access for the front-end or the back-end its just too lightweight for your needs. If you did the front end in something like (cough, spit, splutter - dare I even say it!) Visual Basic you can just connect using ADO to talk to Access then migrate to MSDE and you wont even need to change any client side SQL or connection strings.

If you want to stick with Access there are lots you can do to avoid the limits and speed it up.
The max file size is 2Gb under windows 98 and 4Gb under NT and later.
You can link to as many external 2Gb files as you like, so you can easily change the structure to work within this.
Lots of compacting and repairing.
Play with the indexes you use, it can have major implications on speed.
Good luck.

Number of users will be 1 or 2 max.
Seems that it uses 2.5mb per week, but I may be able to trim that down.
I guess 2.5mb pw will be within the max limit.
Be an interesting exercise as it gets larger.
MSDE sounds interesting, something I will explore. Ta.
