I'm really keen on getting wireless LAN setup at home, just not sure which brands are hot and which are not.

D-Link look pretty resonable price wise, and there seem to be some deals on the 22mbps kit.

Anyone got any advice...?

cheers,
dela

Talking

22Mbps?

Thought the standards were 11Mbps, 54Mbps and 1Gbps.

I will be purchasing some wireless kit sometime soon and doing the odd bit of research on the topic. I had a quick play with 11Mbps cards and got to surf the net sitting in the garden

Be sure to configure the security right.

Stick with the big name makers. If this is for the home, then it would simplify trouble shooting and installation if you stuck with one make.

The Dlink kit as far as I have heard are fine. I believe the leaders of wireless are a company called Proxim.

Best of luck.

Using Netgear stuff, seems fine, works, good range.

I also sit and surf while sitting up the garden with a long drink and listensing to the cricket on the radio.... erm, actually I use it to do work stuff while sitting up the garden while writing code for work, honest boss

The Dlink 22Mbps / Airplus range uses a different modulation Packet Binary Convolutional Coding to achieve the marketed speed of 22Mbps

All the main manufactures Netgear, Linksys etc use Prism chipsets for there wireless clients so performance is very similar. However Linksys uses the prism 3 chipset while Netgear is using the prism 2.5 chipset. Connectivity performance is approximately 30-40% better.
The best 802.11b products for the SOHO market is the Orinoco range aka .:XSTi:.Proxim Proxim took over Orinoco in the last couple of weeks

Thumbs up

have a look at linksys for wireless stuff. new technology for wireless at the moment are dual band AP, running at both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz (Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi5 Compatibility with 802.11a and 802.11b Technology).

i remembered reading something about speed and not all wireless AP are the same. some are slower because of the encryption they are using, etc. have a look at pcmag for any reviews on wireless AP and also practically networked for the hardware.

Hello

I like SMC www.smc.com.

I have a wireless barricade (and have had for a year) and it's great! Wandering aimlessly around the house and garden using the laptop.

Steve.
