Help Needed Network 1 PC attach 2 Workgroups
#1
can anybody help , here is what I need to do
1 PC W98 on Network A (Workgroup is called "upstairs")IP addressed automatically from a server via WINS , no server applications run
want to connect to (Workgroup "downstairs") their IP address is static as it only consists of 1 server and 5 workstations.
so basically I have a windows 98 PC on main network email etc, need to connect it to another network totally different ( ie its CAD),
can I put another network card in the W98 PC and configure for the 2. Never done this before can it be done and is it failry easy to setup
thanks in advance
Jase
PS if another OS is easier to do I should be able to change OS

You should be able to do this no problem, just define the second workgroup and all the settings for the second card. It will use one card for one network and the other card for the other connection.

Are the IPs in the same range/subnet? If so, then just joining the cables (sorry - networks) will allow you to browse the other w/group. Why not do that anyway & change from static downstairs to dynamic from the same WINS - number of benefits there, least of which is not having to remember assigned IPs but potential for more productivity and axcess to email/corporate resources/printers etc
Although a potential security hazard/threat if downstairs knows there is an upstairs ( ffs! ) & they may be able to browse upstairs, unless they have access rights/passwords to the shared resources, then there is little they can do. I presume that tight security is not an issue here?

Network IP's are different,
basically CAD guys don't want anybody near their network, will sanction 1 terminal access from general network nothing more,
major cloak and dagger stuff here.
any more info

The simpliest thing to do would be to place a router between the two networks and then do packet filtering based on IP address between the Upstairs or Downstairs.
Alternatively you could put a small firewall between them....
Jeff
Its DHCP that gives out dynamic addresses, not WINS.

Good point about the firewall Jeff - lots of people assume a firewall is to protect them from viruses (wrong!, although some firewalls have built in virus checking)as viruses get in on the back of mail, etc that users want to let into their network.
Firewalls are for stopping access to unwanted users and so are used to stop the whole of the internet onto your LAN. In the same way, you can use them to block access within the LAN ie put it in the network between upstairs and downstairs
