Toca Race Driver out today - do I buy it?

Proof is in the pudding.
So far all we've had to go on is a beta demo which wasn't optimised at all, so its unfair to judge on it.
I say take the plunge and let us know...I think this new element of racing against personalities in the game is quite interesting. Adds a bit of drama to the proceedings!

Hi Darren,
Have read a couple of reviews on the Beta version and they said it looked pretty good. The demo I saw was pretty damn good (graphic-wise). Will prob get it and will post my thoughts.

Moss - there is a demo with this months Official PS2 magazine. Bought it, was really looking forward to this new racing game, tried it and was dissapointed.
If you select English language the demo is Brands Hatch - circuit is way out from the real thing, and the racing was too easy. Select Australian and the racing is in V8's - this time way too hard.
I am dissapointed with the demo, but may still buy it as the story is quite interesting.
If you want a racing sim though dont bother - it is more of an arcae game.

si - dmo's always state that they are incomplete, but then in the final version you can never notice any difference.
There was so many annoying things in the demo, I dont think they could sort them out in 20% dev time. Dont get me wrong though, I think I will buy it as I need a game and nothing else grabs me til CMR3.

DW, true. It's all down to personal taste. I don't understand people who think GT3 is a good driving simulation, it has nice graphics etc and good arcade feel but the cars IMO don't handle well at all. When I hit a wall at 100mph I want to see the car battered and have mechanical gremlins. On the other hand when I play F1 games with all damage mode turned on it pisses me off when I crash and rip a wheel off and my race is over. I need a game that is somewhere in between the two and I allways found TOCA2 to be about right. So lets hope TOCA Driver keeps us happy unitl CM3.

GT3 is the closest you will ever get to real car handling. The physics are amazing. I have never played a game where you can feel the backend about to slide when turning whilst using the brakes.
Like you say, the only annoying thing is the no-damage rule. Whilst I was playing GT3 the other day i thought to myself how superb a game it would be if ony it had:
1. damage modelling
2. Better AI and more cars per race.
It would be perfecto then.
Toca seem to still have that "floating car" thing going on

I got it yesterday and played it most of last night...
I think its quite good, not the best game in the world but ok. Very arcadey.....
Graphics are ok (some pop-up), story (and acting) is pretty amusing, I think the handling is a bit off on the 4WD and RWD, its got scoobies in it , some real people, damage (yahoo!!), most of its pretty easy though....
I think some of you will love it and some of you will hate it...
