Update our Exchange 5.5 server from SP3 (I know) to SP4 on Friday. The update program ran fine until about 99%, when it through-up a service error. Something about a service with that name not being created.

I was about to restore from backup, until I realised that the system was working fine bar a few annoying problems.

1. The version report in Exchange admin is "5.5.2650.24 Service Pack 3" - can anyone with SP4 tell me what version should be listed.

2. When I try to look at the SMTP or MS Mail connectors, I receive a "Extension XXX could not be loaded". I found Q196924 which explains how to fix it, but the existing value is in hex "18005A0A05000500". How the heck do you enter this 5.5.2653.23 instead??

3. Users reported receiving phantom "notifications". The little envelope would appear in their systray, but they had no messages in their inbox. Anyone seen this before? I've asked them to make sure they restarted Outlook.

alright mate. If SP4 had gone on correctly you should be running 5.5 Build 2653.23. Looks as thought SP4 is not on properly. Have you tried the install again ? Have you got the X400 connectors working correctly ?

Yeah, retried the install a few times and it fails at the same point.

The IMC, MS and X400 connectors all appear to be working. That is, I can happily send e-mails using those connectors.

The install looks like it's copied all the update files, but didn't update the registry properly.

No that wasn't it. It was something about a "service not created with that name". Defo mentioned a service

The phantom notification is coming from the Free/Busy Connector.

No, I shutdown as much of the services that I could at the time, including NetShield. It might have been running first time though, but not the 2nd.

Now the X400 connector is complaing about version numbers.

Hmm, considered that, but want to avoid if possible.

Managed to solve the file version problem with the MS Mail and SMTP connectors.

When you run Exchange Admin in raw mode and follow the instructions for the tech document, you have to click on the Editor button. This gives you an option for File Version where you can enter it in the 5.5.2653.23 format. It then works on the Hex value and allows you to set the registry change.

OK, needed to modify file version for the mail address generators too.

That's sorted most of the errors running the Exchange Admin utility.

Well, sorted the phantom mail notifications too.

Turns out the Free/Busy service isn't configured properly and wasn't started before the upgrade. So, when I ran the upgrade I simply started all the services

Consider it stopped from now on

Thanks for all your help Michael.

Stefan
