Exclamation

I've this week come to the end of my years contract on Blueyonder broadband, so I'm up for a change

Currently paying the £9.99 rental for the phone which gets me the £25 a month broadband access.

I've had some bad problems from day 1 with this outfit and want to ditch them for both services....back to good ol BT for the phone and looking for a deal on broadband.

Anyone got suggestions who's good?, don't someone in to set my PC up as I can do it myself

Was thinking maybe NTL????

Hello

I wouldn't think you are in an NTL AND TeleWest area, but I could be wrong!

Before you ditch BlueYonder, check if you are in an ADSL enabled area www.bt.com/broadband and then have a look at bbs.adslguide.org.uk and pick your ISP.

I would recommend Nildram.

Steve

if your area got telewest, you cant have NTL, or vice versa.

Mail me before you go with BT, I have a letter which I wrote them last night about their service that I think you should have the chance to read

If you go to BT for your phone line, get wires ADSL only from your new ISP and then source your own Ethernet router. I work for an ISP (Business only, not residential) and we are just about to replace the Alcatel 510e four port router with the new version 4 which should be about £100. Routers will let you run NAT so you don't need to worry about a firewall and you can get most of them to do PAT if you fancy running your own web server!

Also, most have a built in 4 port hub so say goodbye to internet connection sharing!

Just cos a router provides NAT does NOT mean you dont need a firewall. A router can obviously block whatever ports/protocols/addresses etc you tell it to but this all adds to cpu/memory overheads if you want to add a lot of entries - especially on such low spec routers.

I would still suggest a half decent software firewall as they are easier to admin.

Simon.
