Groan, Its still happening, we are in a managed office (Regus stylee) so its possibly them, but I doubt it.

I checked every pc was loggin in as DHCP to the DC, and moved all that werent onto it. I have reservations set up 100 - 150, theres only like 100 - 112 in use at the mo. Checked all other servers arent trying to use these - and they arent.

The servers I have are using Ips around the .200s ish, no conflicts found. I have an isdnt router plugged into the network, but as no one is using it I unplugged it.

web browsing slow and cant even stream music at 128kb , now wracking my brains

andy

I now believe that they've crushed our pipe to the outside world. where as b4 we seemed to be able to gobble lots of bandwidth, its seems our office is now sharing 64k! sh1te

Question

Hi all,

Have a small office network, about 10 ish laptop users,a domain controller then about 5 solaris servers and a linux box doing dns, routing etc.

For some unknown reason, "something" seems to be dragging my network down, its gone mega slow - ie browsing web slow, even looking at shared folders on the DC.

any ideas? the only recent change is a solaris machine being plugged back in after being off for a while.

cheers

andy

On a network that size its probably quickest to unplug each machine from the network in turn and check the performance. If you can identify which machine (or pair) are causing the errors/high traffic you stand a better chance of finding the dodgy software thats casuing your problem.

Have a quick look to see if loads of traffic is coming/going from one machine.

On the Solaris box type:

snoop -d <interface> (eg. snoop -d hme0 )

Or on Linux

tcpdump -i <interface> (eg. tcpdump -i eth0)

Check each NIC, I've had faulty cards which storm the network.

It will be a director downloading **** in his office.

Some years ago at a previous company, one of the directors in another office was alwasy causing me grief by complaining about the speed of the network, and how it was affecting the business.
This got quite high profile with me getting a "just sort it out"....

Anyway, quick addition of ip accounting on the cisco router..... and an IP address appeared well above the rest in the amount of traffic it was creating. (inbound to the LAN). Pointed my web browser at the IP address, and it was a subscription **** site.

You can guess the rest, but needless to say, the director never complained again
