Best way to destroy a CD-R ?
#1
I don't want to chuck my old backups in the black bin bag that goes out every wednesday, so whats the safe way to destroy my backup CD's when their out of date? After all the bag could split and some kid could get to see all my ****
I thought of putting them on the BBQ, but I don't want to harm the o zone layer - any ideas ?

How many have you got?
Snapping them in half will probably make them shatter - big mess time.
A few ideas...
Paint the data side with gloss.
If lots of 'em, line them all up on an old piece of pipe and clamp them securely. Then run a power-saw along the length a few times.
Leave in a hot oven for a few minutes until they crinkle.

I use mines as coasters.
If I want to destroy them, I normally snap them in 2.
If its confidental stuff, you can buy disk fuzzers that destroy the medium. Its like placing the disk in a small box type thing that either nuetralizes the disk or damages the surface.

Alternativley use a cd-labeler and stick an AOL logo all over them - that way they're guaranteed never to see the inside of a cd drive again

I'll second the microwave. Makes a cool crazy pattern on the cd and you get a big spark display while it's 'cooking'. Don't microwave them for more than a couple of seconds as you might damage your microwave.

if you put them in a microwave.. .put a cup of water in as well..
I wouldnt run them through a saw as they shatter and end up like bits off glasss...
would just get someone who specialises in media disposal to take them...

Put them in next doors rubbish bin. OR Slip em in the glove box of people's cars who's in for a service(For extra effect just add a pair of black lacy knickers from mark and spencer)
That way if anyone finds anything dodgy they'll cop it not you
Get a section of sheet steel a big bigger than a CD. Put it on the BBQ and then place CD onto sheet steel. That way the CD's will melt but not all over the BBQ.
If you really want it to be unreadable then melting the medium and lots of them together is the only way. You'll be surprised how much data recovery experts can get back from a bashed up CD
