Which platform is it for? NT/2000 is notorious for becoming fragmented and I've found that the defragger can run for hours and then just gives up...

In which case your best bet's to format it and put a proper OS on in its place.

I had this problem before and I found out that it was programs running in the background that were interfering with the defrag program.

Any Norton utilities are notorious for this.

Make sure nothing is running in the background.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del and shutdown everything but Explorer and Systray.

I hope this helps you out.

Thanks, It appeared that I had loads of things running in the background - system resources has now gone from 39% - 85% and the machine is working a whole lot better
