Question

Any recommendations?

I have NTL as my telepone supplier (I pay ntl line rental and call costs) but I was originally with BT. I don't want to use NTL Broadband as this is cable and as such requires I have the cable TV package. I have no interest here as I already have SKY Digital.

The cheaper the better. I have noticed PIPEX do what seems to be a good deal with no set up fee and £22.95 per month. I have however heard horror stories when customers have tried to resolve problems and there seems to have been a few!

Do I HAVE to have a BT account i.e. pay my line rental to BT?

Any recommendations will be greatly received and considered.

Complete rubbish. You don't need to have the NTL TV package to get broadband.
I have SKY TV, NTL phone line and NTL broadband.
All they ask is that you pay the £11 pcm for the phone line rental + the £25 ish for the cable modem (and I think it was £25 installation).

I have NTL broadband. I only have the cable modem and a phone line from them. They may have changed their policies recently, I don't really know as their web site is crap.

www.eclipse.net.uk

£22.75 pcm
£50 set up
Single POP3 mail box with unlimited addresses e.g. anything@something.eclipse.co.uk
20MB of web space on a standard UNIX server www.something.eclipse.co.uk)
Eclipse webmail system - pick up email via the Internet

..and perhaps more interestingly:
- 1 month rolling contract...so you're not tied in if it all goes pear shaped
- phone calls to tech support and admin are answered (reasonably quickly) by real people with proper answers

Small...but pretty well formed

No connection (oops, no pun intended), just a satisfied customer etc etc

Other best contender out of the smaller 'independents' seem to be Nildram

Thanks guy but I am really confused. I think I shall give NTL a call. If you look here it says yo DO in order to take broadband you must "also be a subscriber to our entry level package of services, called the Digital base Pack. This includes our telephony and digital TV service."

How long have you had your facility with them??

Have a look through the forums at www.adslguide.org

I've had ADSL through PIPEX for about 6 months and have never had any problem with it, mind you I've never tried to contact tech support so don't know good or bad they are. A lot of the problems i've read about all ISP's actually appear to be BT related.

Oops. Forgot to say:
- you need a BT land line
- your local BT exchange must have been ADSL'd
- those prices are for 'wires only'. You need at least a ADSL modem. I got an Alcatel Speedtouch ST510 - excellent piece of kit, but a bit hard to configure away from the 'out-the-box' settings and a bit pricey (about £170?). So maybe not so excellent...
- all prices exclude VAT

EXTRACT FROM NTL SITE.

----------------------------
Prices for up to 512K
New Customers
Option 1
Pay a monthly subscription of £52.98 which includes our entry-level digital cable service, the rental of a telephone line** and subscription to our High Speed Broadband Internet service.

Option 2
Pay a monthly subscription of £34.98 which includes the rental of a telephone line*** and subscription to our High Speed Broadband Internet service.

The standard cost for installation of either of these options is £75.

----------------------------

I would take option 2. By the time you take off the £10 for Telephone, it's only £25.
I think you can have either 1 line + TV or 2 lines for £10.
I've had the service for about a year, and it's only gone off once, for about 1/2 an hour.
And no, I don't work for them.

Cheers for that. I have just been in touch with NTL and I evidently don't have a BT Line, I just transfered my number over from BT.

You NTL boys are quite right...and also wrong. Evidently NTL took over my service from Cable and Wireless (I was not an original NTL customer). If you were originally NTL, you are offered a Cable Modem only service only if you wish. If, like me, (and most bods in the North West) you were taken over, the service is only offered via a set top box and you must have the 'base' home package (£17.99 per month).

I shall now speak with BT to see if I can come crawling back (at no cost )

if you have NTL BB with no tel you pay £34pm as opposed to £24pm if you have the TV with them.

Tiggs

ps- personally i have had NTL TV/BB/TEL for 1 yr and coming to the end of my contract- and the chance to leave them- is like being given a second chance at life! i would eat my own limbs before ever dealing with them again- the custumer service (in every sense of the word) is SHOCKING, they have sent me more incorrect bills than is possible to imagine and speaking to them about this (after 9 days on hold) is about as constructive as talking to a dead chimp. (a live chimp would be a vast improvement on an NTL staff member)
