You are going to rebuidl it ? Do you need to save anything off the disc first ?
If not, just setup the laptop BIOS to boot from the CD first, before HD and put in your CD for which ever OS you are going to use.
Well, I know this works for NT4 and Win2000 CDs I have. (Not sure about Win 9x)
Cheers

Gregh,
It really depends what you want to do.
1. If you want to rebuild the machine, then just whack in a Windows XP Installation CD and format the disk during the install
2. If you just want to access the data, do as Chiark said and place the hard disk from the laptop in a standard EIDE chain using a converter available from a hardware store
3. If you just want to gain access to the box then either wait until he returns or visit Here and download CIA Commander. A colleague of mine had to use it recently as he changed a password and forgot it. Doh
DISCLAIMER: STEP 3 IS ASSUMING THAT YOU HAVE BEEN GRANTED ACCESS TO THE MACHINE BY THE OWNER BEFORE HE WENT ON HOLIDAY

Alternatively, can't you just do what I've done with Windows 2000 before (almost the same code, after all ;-) ) and install another 'instance' of XP on the machine and boot into that.
Simply use Partition Magic or the like to split the partition and install a new XP onto it, boot into that and you can access the old area...
