Depending on what you are doing with your system, ie overclocking, you may want to consider dropping the volts on the fans to reduce the speed and thus noise, but also air flow. Have a search for "7v mod", its used a lot and doesnt require anything extra, just a change of wiring on the fan connectors.

As the others have said, if you aren't going to overclock then personally I wouldn't recommend the 7v mod, as it does actually put an uneven load on the PSU, but instead invest in some Papst 8412 NGML 80mm fans for the case, as they really are that silent and a Zalman Flower CNPS6000 Heatsink. That is assuming that you are running socket370/A cpu......
After I had gotten tired of the 'Harrier Jump Jet' noise that my pc had taken on, I ran on the above setup with perfect stability, before making the first jump to watercooling and now am on my second watercooled rig
Cheers,
Nick

Got PIII (SECC2) in one machine, P4 in t'other, but cannot use the flower heatsink cos the PC does not use screws to hold the PCI/AGP cards in place, therefore cannot mount the fan.
Another thing about the cpu fan - IIRC my PC (P4) detects the presence of the 'correct' fan and won't start if it is not found. Any way round this - have checked in the bios and cannot find a disable setting.

I bought the CoolerMaster Heatpipe HSF thing from Scan this week for £21, it's the silent fan version and is literally silent, and much cooler than my previous ThermoEngine, about 15C cooler in fact!

i think to get a good quiet PC, you need to get a quiet PSU as well. have a look at the shuttle XPC at gemma and tom's hardware review.

can't remember. been going for a couple of months with zalman cpu cooler (2ghz p4) and antec truepower psu. not had any problems so don't really know.
just about to buy a couple more antec psu's.
antec also do 80mm case fans with a thermal sensor in them that regulates the speed based on temp. Anyone know of any 40mm fans with thermal control built in?
I'd love to put a Zalman in the rack server but it won't quite fit inside a 1U case!
