Question

what would be the best way to migrate a lotus notes (v4.6) mailbox to outlook 98? can this be done offline coz the notes server is gonna be turn off, eg just copy the .nsf file and then export/migrate it to outlook 98?

what are my options or alternatives?

Suba,

What is it you actually want to do? What databases are you converting?

As far as I am aware, Notes (.nsf) -> Exchange (.pst) is not possible. We are also looking at migrating from Notes to Exchange and so far it is giving us some serious problems.

I'll have a shout round with our guys and let you know the outcome.

basically just to convert the notes mailbox (in 4.6) to a .pst so outlook 98 can view it.

it is part of a migration from notes to exchange 5.5. the users want to keep their old email back (who wouldn't!), so the only way is to convert it to .pst so they can use their outlook 98 client to view the old emails.

any other alternatives?

Nice one, sorry I did not post earlier, today was totally manic.

Would you mind E-mailing me the 'tweak' you made in the notes.ini? It would be a great help

My E-mail address is Darren_Lodge@wgt.com

Many thanks

Done heaps of these (one of my projects last year was to migrate about 400 accounts from Notes to Exchange).

I presume it's a nsf from one of the standard Lotus mailbox templates. By far and away the easiest way to it, is to migrate the nsf server from a Domino server with the Microsoft Migration Wizard which comes with Exchange. Basically, copy the nsf to the server and create a person record which references the nsf. Then ensure on the machine where Exchange admin is installed, that the Notes client (4.5 and greater IIRC) has been installed. Run the Migration Wizard, point it at the server and the person record you created and the Wizard does the rest.

If you don't have access to a Notes server, life gets a bit more difficult you'll probably have to buy software from the likes of OpenOne.

Alternatively (I've never tried this), it is possible to add a Notes mail service into Outlook. Then it should be possible to manually copy the mail from the Notes service into a PST file. Never done this and the Notes service in Outlook is flaky as hell.
