What a weekend, anyway the migration tool failed in sp2, came up with X500 error (looked on technet, and has a fix but tried that and doesn't work)

So short term, running exchange5.5 in domain1 , domain2 (which we were migrating accross to) now has all staff accounts and all data. two way trust, and on exchange5.5 pointing each mailbox account to domain2\username - so short term fix.

now I have exchange 2k box running in domain2, want to migrate mail accross - what other ways are there?

Err, Exmerge? Export the data from the mailboxes on the Exchange 5.5 server and import into Exchange 2000 server. To be truthful, I haven't used exmerge, so perhaps some of the Exchange bods on here might have some pearls of wisdom.

Christian, in the same boat as you in a few months. We are migrating users to the new AD domain as we speak with them getting back to the E5.5 mailboxes via SID history.

Done a few tests with mailbox migration, but seems to be ok. Just hoping the tool wont fail when we come to do it for real

The last possible route that you want to avoid, is to export the contents of the mailbox into a pst file and import in on the new mailbox.... Not that you really want to do that...

I'm currently sitting an Exchange migration course (E5.5 > E2k) and the instructor suggest EXmerge as Miles suggested.

I have never used it before but my instructor raves about it.

used xmerge loads of times...works great, just make sure you have the latest version...more options available with newer one.

Also if using the microsoft migration tool with sid history, their is an issue with distributions lists...it didn't migrate them properly...there is a fix for this now though.

mind you, mine is the older version, but you can download the updates for free (unless this has changed in the last 6 months?)

Wink

the trial version won't have all the features I imagine, they will be greyed out, or it will only let you migrate 1 mailbox.

why don't you do me a good price on the intercooler & I'll send you my trial copy of exchange migrator & most of the other apps as well ??

currently burning the updates to cd as we speak.....exchange migrator service pack & 2 hotfixes

I can extract data, however, when I try to import onto the 2k server:

There are different versions of Exmerge that come with Exchange 5.5 and Exchange 2000, I don't know (cos I'm not in the office and it's 1am ), but is the Exmerge util with Exchange 2000 backwards compatible with Exchange 5.5. And vice versa. Just a wild and dangerous suggestion

Have you looked on the MS site? Good stuff there in the whitepapers section.

no it aint.

I have managed to get the migration tool to work..

basically rebuilt the exchange server from scratch - erased everything. Downloaded Exchange2000 SP1 from the MS website (not the sp1 cd that comes from ms agreement) and it now works, no more x500 errors etc.
