Just about to change a memory chip in someone's PC when I notice it has got some gunk on either end of it by the clips.
Is this something sinister or shall I whip it out anyway ?!

Two possible reasons come to mind.
Some system builders "fix" all cards, cables etc with a resin (looks similar to bathroom sealant) to reduce the instances of cards/connections coming loose in transit.
Sealed to show if anything has been removed so warranty claims can be refused (nail varnish used to be a favourite for this).
Have a look at cables/cards etc to see if it's elsewhere. I'd say whip it out anyway
