Whats determines how fast you can access web sites. Is it solely down to your provider (ntl dialup 4 me) or is there any hardware upgrades which can assist? My systems just basic, so please don't take the pi55. The Scoob uses all my spare cash.

Its your connection speed, 56k modem I assume...always gonna be slow I'm afraid, you could have a top a the range PC and it will be just as slow on the Net as your system
Have you thought about broadband? I use Telewest and pay £25 a month for unlimited access, its on all day so no dial-up connection to mess with. I often get 70k downloads, on average its around 50k. If you try broadband you'll never know how you coped all that time on dial-up I can tell you

My puter is really only used for messing about on the net, so £25 seems a bit much for me (tight git)i pay £10 for unlimited at the moment. I think NTL do 128k broadband for £15. Maybe i will get onto them and see what can be done. Does anyone use NTL bb, and is the fitting cost + the extra £5/month worth it?

Brun,
I have recently upgraded my PC, and I found my internet connection is a bit quicker. I used at have an Athlon 700MHz, now have an Athlon 1800+, and have noticed that my dial-up connection has gone from 33kbps to 46kbps. Admittedly, I have also changed the motherboard, but the modem is still the same one. The only thing I can put it down to is the faster processor.
You also have the added advantage that everything else is faster as well, not just your Net connection!

Brun,
Are you using XP?
If you are I have a tweak that releases 20% of your bandwidth which XP stores for other purposes than your internet access...
Got the tweak from a mag, tried it on my PC tonight and it definitely makes a difference...
Edited to say...This applies to Windows XP PRO..

Brun,
If you can find the extra £5 for the faster NTL connection I'd def. recommend it. Even the 'slow' broadband for £15 will be loads better than dial up. And once you've tried that you could always move to the £25 for 'fast' if you thought you needed to/could afford it.
Basically if you're already paying £10 for 56k the only reason I can see for not paying five quid more for broadband is if you can't get it where you live, it really changes the way you use the net.
HTH,
Alex
