What cable do I need to connect two Ethernet PCs without a Hub or Switch?
#1
As per title...
Both my laptop and home PC have ethernet cards and I want to be able to share files between them. I don't have a hub or switch to use. Can I just connect them together with a RJ45 patch cable? Does it need to be wired in a particular way?
(I'm absolutely not doing this because I want to transfer files onto my home PC that I've downloaded at work using my laptop and taking advantage of their internet connection. No. Not at all. Definitely not)

It needs to be a cross over cable, same as a normal cable but one end is wired the opposite way round. Pretty much all computer places will have them, or make you one up, should be pretty cheap, i paid about £2 for a 5m one not long ago. PC World will also probably have them, if your desperate but expect to pay about 10 times everywhere else

You will also need to assign IP address to each machine or setup DHCP on one of them. This may get semi complicated depending on how your work laptop is configured and the structure of your office setup.

Its easiest to just setup up ip addresses on each. A pedant would say they should be from the rfc1918 ranges and for a netwrok that size you should use 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 mask 255.255.255.0
however if both machines are MS, you set them to DHCP and when they timeout ('cos there is no DHCP server) they will use a stanard set of MS addresses which should work
(or just us netbeui as said)

This is an easy to follow guide to making your own crossover cable.
