check out http://www.rlsupplies.co.uk have not bought a system from them but have bought parts and they can work out cheap.
To cut the cost even more, work out what you really need.
eg. do you need a new monitor or is the one from your old computer still up to the task?
What about the mouse and keyboard?
And also the operating system/software. Do you really need the latest version of windoze or Office?
Of course if you do then buying at the same time as the system is the best time to do it!!
Good luck in your choice

Abit TH7-II P4 Mobo i850 Chipset (RIMM) with ATA100 (S478) £111
1.8 Northwood CPU £160ish
512mb RD RAM is £170ish
hard drive (40gb 7200rpm) £60
Thats the main parts you'd need graphics cards, cd,dvd,cd rw but not for another £1000!!

I would consider going to the smaller, custom builders, as the help and advice they offer is second to none when compared with the likes of pc world, time etc. We use a company called TLC, the lads there are happy to help, and they will not try try to sell you something you don't need. 0161 477 5535. if you call tell them mike put you on to them, I'm not on commission, its just the lads do me untold favours and i like to recommend them in return.
good luck!
