BT Lan Extensions
#1
Does anyone here work for BT or use their LES product?
I need to know why it is so cheap - 10Mb ptp connection across 5km for £4k per year - and is it reliable?
If you are a BT account manager then I might have a new client for you wanting to set up a couple of LES across Edinburgh.
Thanks
Willie

Willie - used to work for one of the big four banks in London. We were starting to use LES circuits extensively around the city. Some from Colt for 10 or 100 meg ethernet and some 155 circuits (BT I think) for ATM.
They're cheap because its genuine point-to-point fibre (albeit muilplexed where required). Where the infrastructure exists (e..g the city) it is actually very cheap to provide that sort of bandwidth. Also the service provider doesn't need to provide much either end so again little investment.
Leased lines etc are expensive in comparsion because they use the central PSTN trunks which is all geared around lower bandwidths.

We have 3 x 100MBps Lan Extensions. Been rock solid for the past couple of years. Haven't had any downtime yet. 2 circuits cover about 1.5 miles each and the other circuit is about 5 miles.
