"Buy XP" they said,
"Much better than 200Pro" they said,
Forgot to mention that the bloody thing hangs every time I try to install an update or a patch!!!!!!
And no It's not a driver or a peice of software, I cant get that far. Any ideas as to why this usless piece of crap is hanging everytime windows installer fires up?

Chris,
Hope it isn't PEBCAK, I do this for a living !!!!!!!
There's gotta be summink, cant even find an error in the event log
which worries me. I have just managed to download IE6 and reinstall it (took 5 reboots) I know my machine is home built, but everything checks out fine.....this is weird, may go back to 2K
that, at least worked !!

I had two problems when installing XP. The first was that the (relatively new) motherboard needed its BIOS flashed.
Then XP didn't like one of the memory sticks that I had been using with 98SE without a problem.
Been fine ever since though.

Which version are you running m8, and which activation code ? Is is a fully legal version ?. Some corporate activation codes will lock up on patches. Part of Microsoft crack down.

The best ever version of Windows ever released without a shadow of a doubt. You must have got the copy burnt on a friday arvo as everybody I know using it has minimal problems if any.
What sort of hardware are you running? If its old you may have some problems.

As an ex IT manger for 6 years and with a Cambridge postgrad in dossing with technology, I can truly say that XP is the most beta software I have ever come across. Push it just a little and it breaks. Try and use a 'compatible' driver and it breaks. Apply logic to it and it breaks.
That's why no serious financial company in the city is using it. It doesn't work and cannot be trusted. I'm sure some of you use it at home and have no problems. Personally I am amazed that a company the size of Microsoft can get away with such a dodgy piece of software (actually I am not that amazed...)
The aim of MS is to please the home masses - success for the 80% who use the internet, use word , games and a few bits and bats. The other 20% (including my computer illiterate mum) are destined to a year of frustration... Bring on XP2

It's a full legal £169:00 upgrade.
All I want to do is dowload the latest patches for the sodding thing...................Is that too much to ask?

Chris.me a UNIX boy, but leave it with me and I'll track down the info on my board.
The RAM is rock steady, at least I have no Event logs to say otherwise, I think the MB is a GIGABYTE board, I have docs somewhere, I'll check.
BTW 3 reboots just to post this, do you think kicking **** outta the box may help ?

Will help you BF, might even improve stability, you never know.
Award just provide the base BIOS for most of the mobo vendors and they tweak it for their own use, hence finding the vendor should yield a flash update.
Any chance of a full system spec?

my machine never worked properly with 98, it was as though it was filling up the memory and never emptying it, so after a while of opening programs my computer used to slow down then crash and hang.
now i have XP on there its perfect, never hangs or crashes, no errors.
i am running an asus motherboard with onboard ide raid and and AMD athlon 1000. i swear to u that i think its the athlon processor that 98 didn't like.
anyway, i like XP.

Yup.
MS lowered the bar to software development so low that any bozo can do it now, and most of them get it wrong. A clean install of XP, with only quality (read well developed) software installed is viable.
Of course banks don't use XP. If you had to upgrade 5000 desktops and 80 servers you would take your time.
Anyways, if you find that XP is worse than 2k, you are doing something wrong, PhD or not...
BTW: Intersting that this thread hasn't been locked, given that it's title is patently libelous.
