Question

DELL PC's. are they any good ? Need to buy a home PC, and a mate works for them.

How do they compare against machines from smaller manufacturers such as Evesham, Mesh ?

I know you won't get the same level of equipement with them, I just want to make sure they've got decent motherboards, are reliable and are safe to upgrade etc...

Cheers,
Daz

well the motherboard and psu are proprietary, reliability is good but upgrades are sometimes hard, they don't do AMD support can sometimes be a little so so. but not bad for a home pc id prefer mesh really you get more choice

I self-build nowadays, but have an old dell PC which is now about five years old. Had no problems with it at all. All the PCs in the office where I work are Dell PCs too. If you want a good, reliable work horse which may not be quite the cheapest or quite the fastest PC on the market, then go for one.

Edited to say that a few years ago Dell PCs had proprietry motherboard/PSU power connectors. Standard ones would fit, but the polarity of the cables were different, so a fried MB would result. Don't know if this is still the case, but I do believe Dell still specify their own MBs.

Gary.

I've been very happy with them.

The only thing I don't like on my new 8100 is no reset button - you kinda need it with windozzz

Cheers chaps.

I'll do some more comparisons with some of the smaller manufacturers before deciding I think.

definitely consider eversham and mesh. checkout some computer magazines for reviews, especially group reviews so you know which one is the best out of the bunch.
