ME = Dont even bother with it!

If the machine is powerful enough i personally would go with WinXP i have been running it for about a year and have had no problems what so ever!

He should take a look at his hardware and try to identify compatability issues and make a decision on what to do about them (if there are any) before deciding what operating system to upgrade to. Also consider the use he intends to put the machine to, and go for the operating system that best meets his requirements.

Another vote for XP. Vast improvement over 98 and better than NT/Win2k too. As someone else said check hardware compatibility alhough if he's running a fast Athlon XP I doubt he'll have problems. Is he planning to use it to play games? If he is then that might influence the choice too.

My machine is a superduper athlon, raid-0 disks, Geforce3 and SB Audigy.

XP will not run with a hint of stability on this system. No way. Win2k (with various patches) works fine. People I know have reported same issues with Athlon+VIA Chipsets+Geforces+Soundblasters.

So for me, Win2k Pro rocks.

IMHO: XP Pro is far more stable than any other M$ Operating System. I use my systems for work and play, and you will be pleased to hear I've not yet had problems running games on XP (even old games that were designed for Win95, or even MS-DOS, like Doom, Original Quake etc etc).

I've seen some people above recommend Win2000, but I can't say I've had good experiences with it, maybe I was just unlucky.

Go for ME

mega_stream and any one else this might interest,

In regards to the infinite loop problem with nv4_disp.dll and XP ...

Open up the device manager.
Expand the 'computer' option, and you should see an item called ACPI uniprocessor PC
Highlight this item and select 'update driver'
select 'install from a specific location'
choose 'don't search' and click 'next'
scroll down and select 'Standard PC'
you will have to reboot and it will redetect all of you hardware.
After I did this I had no problems, except that it now takes about 30 seconds longer for my computer to start up. Not a bad tradeoff for actually being able to use it as intended

The only other non standard settings I have at the moment is 256Mb AGP Aperture (I have 512Mb RAM).

Oh, and I am using the 29.42 signed drivers.

Andrew.

I used to test compatability issues with the ME O/S. And have I ever seen a worse pile of stuck together software. I run Win2k Pro all the time and have done some work on XP but depending on your needs i would probably go for XP now. If you don't want all the networking capability and enhanced administrative funtionality then XP Home should do your job. Win2k is a bit more hardcore & techie but is a mighty fine O/S. I'd probaly go for XP if I were you. Sooner or later Microsoft will bring out XP Server and Win2K will be phased out.

Or you could just try RedHat Linux 7.2 (only kiddin)

Most irritating bit is that i have to go back to being a scoobie newbie again after somehow managing to muck up my password and email address at the same time. Ah well. I'll soon have my post rate back up.

In response to the original question () I would say that he should look at why he is thinking of upgrading. If his machine is running fine and he can do everything he wants on it then what's the point in upgrading (if it ain't broke, etc), aside from making MS wealthier...?

Just to prove the XP stability thing, I use my PC a lot for Games, the Internet, Webdesign, and general other stuff, and my PC has now been running for 2 weeks, 1 day, 17 hours, 35 mins and 48 seconds!! That's constent, not one reboot, no crashing, no nothing. Not been off once.

XP Pro is the most stable OS i've ever used.

Outlook is cr@p ... as is PINE (IMHO). Elm is much better and more cryptic! Btw, my Unix box has been up 198 days so far but it only went down due to a site power outage...
