Default Why can't I download and instal Internet Explorer?

Trying to put this rubbish in place as my computer refuses me access to the firewall without IE5.5 or above

Have had FIVE goes. Each time, it does the download of the exe file, asks for permission, starts downloading all the bits, then just stops and there's nothing there?

Trying for IE11? Is that right?

From memory (and it's been a while) IE11 requires five or six prerequisites before it will install. Most of these prerequisites are installed as normal windows updates over time but you might be missing some. In c:\windows there will be a file called IE11.log that will give more info as to why it's failing...

Update:

So yesterday it threw a rod. It started by hanging for about half an hour, then suddenly cleared all the icons off the desktop and just stat there, nothing, just a cursor and nothing I did would work.

Eldest's mate came round, managed to get it to save all my files to an external hard drive. This morning it had finished that...but when I clicked the mouse to wake it, we are back to normal.

Two things though. First it downloads but will NOT run C-Cleaner, ditto IE11.

What the hell is up with it?

The lad that got it to save my files reckons if I give it him for an afternoon, with a list of what software I want saved, he'll wipe it and do a clean install, and put my software back, (stuff like Photoshop, for which the installation disc has "gone missing").

Should I?

Even stranger now....unplugged the external hard drive that has been saving my files, the computer hung again. And yes, I did ask it's permission before unplugging.

Plugged it in, restart, back to normal.

Flatten it and do a fresh install.

Is it a desktop or a Laptop?

The real question is... can you afford NOT to.

Muslims have a saying that goes something like "I'm not rich enough to buy cheap rubbish"

I spent a small fortune on microsoft products over the years and had nothing but trouble, Macbook Air... ok it was 800 quid... but it represents the best bang for buck I've had out of computers in well over 20yrs of owning them, oh and it's still going, just past it's 6yr anniversary... trouble free.

£300 quid 2nd hand.

I hear what you are saying, and get the same from an ex-uni mate.

But: I don't have £800 for a new one, not even £300 for a used one, which I would be reluctant to have anyway.

And: I don't like laptops. I have one for use in France, just so it's easily transportable, as computers don't like the cold/damp when I'm not there, but far prefer the tower/keyboard/monitor setup.

Absolute rubbish, i've had windows PC's running for decades (servers) and oldish desktops with zero issues. If you get Windows issues that you can't resolve its usually down to user error and/or incompetence

Memtest +86 it overnight

This and your Ethernet driver crapping out may be an issue with a dodgy RAM stick corrupting stuff. It can cause all sorts of random weirdness.

If that gives the all clear, you can go ahead and clean slate it in relative confidence that it won't **** up again (well, at least for s while, at least ).
