Question

I am not a PC guru and work from home using a stand alone PC (also used by kids).
Machine is pretty slow and gummed up with all sorts of programmes and currently has some damaged files. I want to run ScanDisk to repair things but some background programmes keep interfering and interupting ScanDisk which never completes the task. Before starting ScanDisk I close down any programmes I have been using and disable Norton. What else should I do. For example there are still several active icons on botttom right of screen such as time etc. If I hit CTRL/ALT/DEL then there is a pile of stuff running but I don't know what the hell it all means and don't want to close things down in case I screw up the machine. Am I asking the right sort of question and what should I close and what should I leave running to ensure system will re-start properly. For info the main programmes I use are Windows 95, Word, WordPerfect, ACT, Outlook Express. Any advice appreciated. Thanks in advance. David
