Apple have a history of messing with Web pages formats, last time was when they had to issue a public apology to Samsung in their website. They altered the format to hide the apology. Apple got dragged in front of the QC to explain and correct their underhand behaviour

There's no 'messing' as such it's just a span, a way of singling out parts of a web page for formatting.
